Have you recorded some videos with your smartphone or tablet and accidentally deleted them? You can't find some videos on your PC anymore and you're worried that they were mistakenly deleted? If these are the situations in which you find yourself, you'll be happy to know that maybe I can give you a hand to recover your videos.
In today's guide, in fact, I'll show you how to recover deleted videos from smartphones, tablets and PCs thanks to some tools suitable for the purpose, most of them free. First, I'll explain how to use the default tools of the operating systems installed on your devices to recover videos not yet permanently deleted. After that, I'll give you some information about third-party apps and software that can help you restore deleted videos from Android devices, iPhone, iPad and computer.
I bet you can't wait to get started, right? In that case, let's not waste any more time and get to work right away. Just sit back and pay attention to the procedures I'm going to describe in the next few chapters, so you can be sure that you'll be able to recover your deleted videos. Are you ready? Are you? Great! At this point, all that's left to do is wish you a good read and, above all, good luck!
Before explaining to you in detail how to recover deleted videos from smartphones, tablets and computers, I would like to make some clarity on the procedures that you will face.
If you're lucky and you haven't really deleted your videos, but you've simply moved them to the Recycle Bin (the section, local or on the cloud, where deleted files are "parked" before their actual deletion), you can restore them, through the latter, without the slightest problem and without running the risk that they have become corrupted.
If, however, you have emptied the Recycle Bin and really deleted your videos, you still have some hope of recovering them, but only through third-party software and without having the certainty that they, even in case of restoration, are fully playable. When you delete a file, in fact, the memory area that occupied it is marked as free by the operating system and occupied, as soon as possible, with new data. If you act before this overwriting occurs, you may be able to recover your videos, but not otherwise.
That's why it's important to minimize the use of the device where the video you want to recover was stored, in order to avoid overwriting the memory areas that occupied the deleted files and increase the chances of recovering them in their entirety. Is everything clear so far? Well, then let's proceed.
How to recover deleted videos on Android
There are many solutions you can use to recover deleted videos on Android, and in the next few chapters I'll recommend you some of the best ones.
If you use the Google Photos app on your smartphone or tablet to manage your photos and videos, you'll be happy to know that there's a section within the app called Recycle Bin that allows you to recover all the media files (photos and videos) that you've deleted in the last 60 days. Unfortunately, however, after this period, the files are completely removed from the device and you have to try your luck, using data recovery software, which I'll talk about in the next chapters.
To restore a deleted video from the Google Photos app, launch the app and click on the ☰ icon at the top left. In the box that you see now, select the option Recycle Bin, to access the archive of deleted files.
Now, all you have to do is locate the video you want to restore and tap on its thumbnail, then press the Restore button at the bottom right to recover it.
On some smartphones and tablets, such as Huawei's, there's the Gallery app, which performs a similar function to the one I showed you in the previous paragraphs for Google Photos.
So, you need to launch the Gallery app and select the Recently Deleted album to access the section containing the deleted videos. Now, tap on the video thumbnail and press the Restore button, to recover the previously deleted video.
If you didn't get a chance to recover the video using the tips I mentioned in the previous chapter, you can use a third-party solution, such as the EaseUS MobiSaver app for Android smartphones and tablets, the free version of which allows you to restore videos in MP4 format. To recover additional file formats, you need to purchase its paid version, which costs €6.49.
You can install EaseUS MobiSaver on your device via the Android Play Store by pressing the Install button. Then wait for the download and installation process to finish and launch the app, using the Open button or its home screen icon.
When EaseUS MobiSaver starts, you will see a message to access the root of your device, so that you can perform a thorough memory scan. In case your Android device does not have such permissions unlocked, the memory scan will be limited to the cache only, thus decreasing your chances of success.
To recover a deleted video, on the app's main screen, click on the Photos & Videos button and wait for the memory scan to complete. Once you've located the video you want to recover, check the box next to it and click the Recover button at the top.
If you've carefully followed the steps I've outlined in the previous paragraphs, your video will be restored and you can view it in a special section within the app, accessible via theeye icon in the upper right corner.
How to Recover Deleted Videos on iPhone and iPad
On iPhone and iPad, you can recover deleted videos using the tools available on iOS or third-party apps, such as those I'll talk about in the next chapters.
The Photos app on iOS allows you to manage the media gallery on iPhones and iPads, with the ability to recover videos and photos that you deleted by mistake. You can only do this for media files that have been deleted in the last 40 days. After this time, the data is deleted from the device, so you'll have to turn to data recovery solutions to try and recover it.
To restore a deleted video in the Photos app, launch the app and select the Albums tab at the bottom. There, scroll through the different entries until you find the Recently Deleted tab. Once you've found the video you want to recover, tap on the Select button in the upper right corner and highlight the file you want to restore by clicking its thumbnail. Now press the Recover button to restore the selected item.
If you have activated the iCloud Photo Library service on your iPhone or iPad, the procedure described above can also be done from the iCloud web panel, reaching the Deleted section of recent: to learn more, I recommend you read my guide dedicated to the topic.
Do you use the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad, and have you activated the photo sync feature with the service in question? Then know that you can recover a deleted video from the app by accessing the Trash section of the same, reached by pressing the icon ☰, which can be found at the top left.
As I explained in the previous chapter dedicated to Android, all you have to do is locate the video you want to recover and click on its thumbnail, so as to select it. At this point, tap on the Restore button, and you're done.
If you have permanently deleted the videos you are interested in, so you cannot recover the deleted video on iPhone or iPad using the tips I gave you in the previous chapters, you can try to use EaseUS MobiSaver: it is a desktop software available for Windows and macOS that allows you to recover deleted data from iOS devices. In its free version, it allows you to restore one file at a time, but by purchasing a license at a cost of €69.42, you can remove this limitation.
The basic requirement for the software to work properly is to have the latest updated version of iTunes installed on your PC. In case you're acting from Windows, you can download the latest version of iTunes from Apple's website, taking care not to download the one available on the Microsoft Store on Windows 10, as you might run into operating errors.
To download EaseUS MobiSaver, reach its official website and hit the Free Download button. Then, under the Free heading, click on the Download button to fetch the .exe file for Windows: after downloading it, double-click on it and press Yes in the User Account Control pane.
On macOS, instead, you can download the .dmg file for the installation of the program through this page, pressing the Free Download button. After downloading it, double-click on it and drag EaseUS MobiSaver to the Applications folder of macOS. Then, right-click on the software icon and select Open from the context menu. In the message that appears on the screen, confirm that you want to open the software by clicking the Open button (this is only required for the first time and is used to bypass macOS restrictions on applications from non-certified developers).
After installing EaseUS MobiSaver, connect your iPhone or iPad to your PC using the included cable and start this software. On its main screen, then choose the Recover from iOS Device tab and press the Scan button.
After the scan is complete, place a check mark on the thumbnail of the video you want to recover, which can be found in the Photos/Videos tab, press the Recover button (bottom), choose the destination folder and press the confirmation button, to export the selected file.
How to recover deleted videos on PC
If you've mistakenly deleted a video from your computer's hard drive or SSD, what you can do is to take action with the solutions I'll explain in the next chapters, suitable for both Windows and macOS.
If you have deleted a video on your Windows PC or Mac, most probably it is still in the Trash. In this case, you can easily recover it through the directions I'll give you in the next few lines.
First, open the Trash using its icon that you find on the desktop (Windows) or on the Dock (macOS). In the screen that is shown, locate the video that you deleted and right-click on it, if you use Windows. If you're using macOS, however, you need to drag the file icon to a folder of your choice.
Cloud Storage Services
Do you use cloud storage services to store your personal data, including videos? That's great news, because if you do, you can almost certainly get them back via a section of those services that temporarily stores deleted files before permanently deleting them.
If you use Dropbox, for example, you can recover deleted files by going to the service's official website and logging in with your credentials. Now, in the sidebar of the main screen, select File > Deleted Files and put a check mark on the video you want to recover, then press the Restore button, located in the upper left corner, and you're done. The file will be restored to its original folder.
The procedures for recovering a deleted video on Google Drive and OneDrive are very similar. Go to the Google Drive or OneDrive websites and log in with your credentials. After that, in the sidebar, select the Recycle Bin tab and locate the video you want to recover. Then click the Restore button (thespinning arrow icon) at the top and the file recovery process will start.
Finally, you can easily recover a deleted video from iCloud Drive in a similar way as described above. First, sign in to the iCloud website using your credentials and press on the iCloud Drive icon. In the bottom-right corner, click on the Recently Deleted button and then click on a video thumbnail to recover it instantly.
Couldn't recover your video using the solutions I mentioned in the previous chapters? In this case, you can try your luck using some third-party solutions, dedicated to data recovery by analyzing local memory sectors. Some examples? PhotoRec. This is a free and open source software that allows you to recover files from any memory drive, such as hard drives, SD cards or USB sticks. It comes bundled with TestDisk, another free and open source software specifically dedicated to recovering deleted/damaged partitions.
To use PhotoRec on Windows, macOS or Linux, first download the installation file from the official website. Please note that on macOS and Linux, however, the software can only be used via the command line, as it is devoid of the graphical interface, present, however, in the Windows version.
Once you've reached the PhotoRec website, click on the Download tab in the sidebar and select the version of the operating system installed on your PC. On Windows, you will download a .zip file and extract it to a folder of your choice.
At this point, open the folder where you extracted the contents of the archive and double-click on the qphotorec_win.exe file. Then choose the drive you want to scan and select FAT/NTFS/HFS+/ReiferFS, which you can find in the File system type section.
We're almost there: select the extension of the video files you want to recover by pressing the File formats button, click OK and then click Browse to choose the destination folder (where the recovered videos should be saved). Finally, press the Search button to start analyzing and restoring all files with the extensions you've chosen.
Another software that can help you is Recuva, which is available for free on Windows PCs. You can also purchase a Professional version, which is not necessary for your purposes, at a cost of €19.95, which unlocks additional features, such as automatic updates or advanced search tools.
If you are interested in this software, I recommend you to download its portable version, which does not require any installation to work, from this page. After downloading the .zip file, extract its content into any folder on your PC and double-click on the .exe file that you find inside, in order to start Recuva.
On the screen that appears, press the Next button, select the Video option and specify the last location where the video was located before being deleted (e.g. In the recycle bin). Then press the Start button to start the memory analysis.
At the end of the procedure, you will see all the videos detected by Recuva. To recover a video, place a check mark under its thumbnail and press the Recover button in the lower right corner. Then choose the destination folder and click the OK button to move the recovered video to the location you selected.
For more information on how to use Recuva, see my guide to the program.
Disk Drill (Windows/MacOS)
In addition to the tools I recommended in the previous chapters, I suggest you to use Disk Drill, which you can download for free on Windows and macOS. In its free version, it allows you to restore only 500MB of data, but you can remove this limitation by purchasing its Pro version, which costs $89.
To download this software on Windows, go to this page and click on the Free Download button to download the .msi file. At this point, double-click on the file and press Next (three times), Yes and Close to complete the setup.
If you use macOS, instead, you have to download Disk Drill by going to this page and clicking on the Free Download button: this will start the download of the .dmg file of the program. Once the download is complete, double-click on the downloaded file and move Disk Drill to the Applications folder of macOS.
Then right-click on the icon and choose Open from the context menu. In the warning that appears on the screen, press the Open button, to confirm the start of this software bypassing the basic protections of macOS (which is required only for the first time). After opening Disk Drill, in the screen that appears, press the Continue and Start buttons. At this point, enter your Mac password in the box provided and click the OK button.
To recover a deleted video, on the main screen of the software, select thedrive where the file was located before it was deleted and press the Recover button. After the drive analysis is complete, locate the video you want to restore and place a checkmark next to its name. Then press the Recover button and you're done.
How to recover deleted videos from SD card
Have you accidentally deleted a video from your SD card? In this case, if you want to act directly through your Android smartphone, you can use some third-party solutions, such as EaseUS MobiSaver, which I told you about in detail in this chapter.
Alternatively, you can connect your SD card to your PC or Mac and use third-party memory scanning software, such as the ones I mentioned in previous chapters, such as PhotoRec or Recuva.
How to recover deleted videos from WhatsApp
If you received a video on WhatsApp and deleted it by mistake, you can try to recover it using the solutions I have already described in the previous chapters.
EaseUS MobiSaver can be a great solution to recover a video from the memory drive of your smartphone or tablet. For this purpose, please refer to what I have already explained in the chapter dedicated to Android or the one dedicated to iOS.
If you have enabled media backup in Google Photos for WhatsApp folders, you can recover your videos by following the instructions I gave in this chapter.
Alternatively, you can refer to what I have explained in this guide to check if the video is present in your old WhatsApp backups.
How to recover deleted videos from YouTube
If you have removed a video from your YouTube channel, unfortunately, I must warn you that it is not possible to restore it in any way, as the deletion process is irreversible. In this regard, my advice is to check if the video is still present on your device's storage drive, so you can recover it from there.
Otherwise, if the video was present on your device but has been deleted from there, you can try to restore it using the advice I gave in previous chapters, those dedicated to Android, iOS and PC.
I can't assure you, however, a positive outcome in the procedure to recover data from the memory, if a long time has passed since their deletion: the portion of memory on which the video was saved may have been overwritten by other data, making it impossible to restore it.
How to recover deleted videos from Facebook
The same thing I told you about YouTube also applies to Facebook: after a video is deleted, it is no longer possible to recover it, since there is no historical archive of the published data.
You can restore the file only if it was previously hosted on the memory of your Android device, iOS or your computer. The procedures you have to follow are those described in the previous chapters of the tutorial.
