How to use the TV without original remote control

If you are no longer able to use the original remote control of your TV, for one reason or another, you can take advantage of a series of alternative solutions, so as to make the device in your possession operational again: use a Universal remote control, use the physical keys available on the TV itself or take advantage of a variety of app for smartphone and tablet able to act as a remote control. Find everything explained in detail below.

Use a universal remote control

If your TV remote control is broken or no longer working properly, the easiest way to go, without a shadow of a doubt, is to get yourself a Universal remote control and to program it, later, to communicate with the device in your possession.

There are really many types of remote controls of this type, suitable for practically all budgets and compatible with most televisions available on the market. Before proceeding with the purchase, however, I advise you to check that the TV model in your possession is also present in the list of supported TVs.

Below, I propose a series of universal remote controls of this type, available online.

Once you have the right remote control for your TV, all you have to do is program it, following the procedure outlined in the supplied manual. Generally, a universal remote control can be programmed in two different ways.

  • Automatically - to proceed with automatic programming, it is necessary to switch on the TV and press a precise combination of buttons on the remote control, in order to set it in "search" mode. Finally, you have to press several times a specific key (usually the switch off), until the relative command is received by the TV.
  • Manually - in this case, it is necessary to press a combination of keys on the remote control, to set it in "learning" mode, and then enter a code specific to your TV model.

The specific steps to take, in this case, vary from remote control to remote control; for more information, I invite you to take a look at my guide on how to program a universal remote control, in which I have explained everything to you in detail.

Use the physical keys

If your TV is equipped with physical keys, you can easily use the latter to carry out the fastest control operations: switching on / off, changing channels, changing the volume and, where applicable, accessing the main settings menu.

These buttons, on older models of televisions, are generally placed in the front of the same, just below the screen; on flat-screen TVs, as well as on Smart TVs, the physical buttons can, on the other hand, be located on one of the side edges of the device, or on the back, generally well hidden.

After identifying them, you have to take a look at the related icons to understand the function of each of them: the keys dedicated to controlling the channels (or options), are generally identified by the wording P+P-; the keys dedicated to volume control, on the other hand, are identified by an icon in the shape of speaker or volume bar, together with the symbol that indicates the direction ("+" to increase, "-" to decrease); finally, the standby / shutdown key is identified by the classic symbol of circle with a vertical stroke inside of.

On some TV models, the button may also be present OK, the button Menu and the key Smart. The physical keys, generally, are always functional, as long as the TV is on or in standby: all you have to do, to use them, is to press them and wait for the TV to respond to the command received (usually this happens after a few moments) .

Use the manufacturer's app

In some cases, if the TV has functionality Smart and has been previously connected to the Internet, it is possible to use a specific app released by the manufacturer itself, suitable for transforming the smartphone or tablet into a full-blown remote control.

The operation of apps of this type is very simple: once you have identified the application provided by the TV manufacturer, simply install it on your smartphone / tablet via the store integrated into it (Play Store for Android o App Store for iOS / iPadOS) and, after connecting the device to the same Wi-Fi network as the TV, launch the app and wait for the TV to be automatically recognized.

In some cases, you may need to confirm the connection by entering a pin code, or by answering in the affirmative to the confirmation message displayed on the TV screen: in the latter case, simply connect a USB mouse to it and use it to press the button OK.

However, once the connection is established, the buttons on the remote control will appear on the display of the smartphone or tablet, which can be used to control the TV.

For example, if you have one LG Smart TV equipped with an operating system WebOS, puoi avvalerti dell'app LG TV Plus, available for free on the Android Play Store and on the iOS and iPadOS App Store.

Once the app is installed on the device, make sure that the latter is connected to the same Wi-Fi network that the TV is connected to (which must be turned on), otherwise you can do it yourself. Then, launch the app previously installed on your phone or tablet, press the button OK and grant the necessary permissions for its operation by pressing the button Allow attached to the various warning screens that appear.

Subsequently, accepts the license agreement, by tapping on the appropriate item (top right), in order to start the automatic search for TVs available on the network: after a few moments, if everything went well, you should see the name appear of your LG TV.

At this point, select the TV detected, enter the pin code displayed on the screen of the latter and that's it: once the connection is established, you can use the virtual buttons on the smartphone (or tablet) screen to control the TV!

If needed, you can use the buttons displayed at the top of the screen to switch between keypad to the directional console (the one containing the directional arrows / virtual trackpad and colored buttons).

Note: most of the apps of this type allow you to control the television in all its aspects and to switch off the device, but not to switch it on; to carry out this last operation, it is advisable to use the physical power button.

Use a remote control app

If your TV is not connected to the Internet, but you have an Android terminal that has the infrared (IR) port, you can use the latter to control your TV, using an app specially designed for the purpose.

Generally, apps of this type are pre-installed on Android devices with an IR port; if you have a branded smartphone Xiaomi, for example, you can use the app Remote control (o I Remote Controller), which you can call up directly from the operating system drawer. If you don't already have it, you can download the Xiaomi app directly from the Play Store and install it on any Android version later than 4.3.

Once the app starts, tap the button Accept, to accept the privacy policy and software license terms, and tap the button Add remote control, to start the configuration phase of a new device.

Then, tap the button TV, select the brand of the TV from the list that is proposed to you (eg. LG) and proceed with the configuration, following the instructions that are proposed to you: specify if the TV is active or off, then point the remote control at the TV and press the buttons on the screen indicating, when prompted, whether or not they work.

When the setup is complete, choose the location of the TV, indicate a name to assign to the newly configured remote control and choose whether or not to add a shortcut to the Home screen. Done! From now on, you can use the virtual buttons to control the TV through your smartphone screen.

How do you say? Does your device not have an app used as a remote control or, even worse, does it not have an infrared port? If this is the case, you may find my guide to remote control apps very useful, in which I have listed a series of excellent applications of this type, working both via the IR port and via Wi-Fi connection (in the latter case , the TV and the smartphone / tablet supplied with you must be connected to the same network).

How to use Apple TV without a remote

How do you say? Do you have an Apple TV but, unfortunately, the remote no longer wants to work? Don't worry, the solution could be much simpler than you can imagine!

If you have already connected the Apple box to the Internet, you will be pleased to know that you can control it through an app developed and published by Apple: Apple TV Remote, which is available for free on the App Store. For this to work properly, it is essential that the iPhone / iPad and the Apple TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Anyway, first, make sure your Apple TV is turned on (if not, you can fix it by unplugging and reconnecting the box to the power supply), then download Apple TV Remote on the iPhone (or iPad), start it and that's it: if everything went well, the app should be able to automatically detect all the Apple TVs connected to the Wi-Fi network currently on use.

All you have to do at this point is tap the name of the device to be controlled, enter the code displayed on the TV and wait for the remote control interface to appear on the smartphone (or tablet) display.

As you can see, the layout of the virtual buttons is practically identical to that used on the "physical" remote control of the device. If necessary, you can also use the virtual Apple TV remote to type text, using the onscreen keyboard.
