Prima di enter the live tutorial, walking to spiegare how to rejoin a partitioned hard drive, there are some preliminary operations which I believe you should carry out.
As mentioned at the beginning, the unification of two or more hard disk partitions implies the deletion of all the data present in the secondary partitions. This means that you absolutely must create a backup of data on secondary partitions, if you don't want to lose them, of course.
Subsequently, since the partitioning of a hard disk is an activity that always involves a small percentage of risk, I recommend that you also perform a also backup the data on the primary partition (which, in any case, should remain intact at the end of the procedure). If you don't know how to back up your data, you can follow the directions I gave you in my guide on how to back up your PC.
To make backups, I recommend using a external hard disk. In this regard, if you do not yet have a device of this type and want to receive some advice about which brand, model and type to buy, you can consult my buying guide dedicated to external hard drives.
Another very important thing to underline is that, for any file system, only partitions can be merged adjacent. As a practical example, if you have a disk partitioned into four parts A, B, C and D, you can merge A and B by deleting B and embedding free space in A, but you cannot do the same with A and D.
Also keep in mind that the instructions on the operations to combine the various partitions of a disk are valid for both indoor units than for those external and not just for mechanical hard drives, but also for discs SSD.
How to reunite a partitioned hard drive on Windows
At this point, I would say that we can finally get to the heart of the guide and go to find out, in practice, what needs to be done for reunite a partitioned hard drive on Windows. You can do this both by using the solutions already included in the operating system and by resorting to the use of third-party tools. To find out more, please continue reading.
Be vuoi scoprire how to rejoin a partitioned hard drive with Windows 10, but also how to reunite a partitioned hard drive with Windows 7 and with any other version of the operating system from Microsoft up to Vista, I inform you that you can first of all rely on Disk management, the default tool that allows you to fully manage your computer's disks and partitions.
To use it, therefore, click on Start button (I cheer with the windows flag) che trovi nella part in fund to sinistra della taskbar, type "Partitions" in the search field and select the link to the utility Create and format hard drive partitions.
In the window that opens, right-click with the mouse on one of the "minor" partitions that you want to merge with the main one of the system and select the item Delete volume menu that appears. Then press the button Yes to respond to the Windows warning that you are about to delete the partition and wait a few seconds for your partition to turn into Free space.
At this point, repeat the same operation for all the partitions you want to merge to the main one and transform the available space into unallocated space to merge with the main disk partition. To do this, right-click with the mouse on the volumes you previously deleted (one at a time), select the item Delete partition from the menu that appears and click the button Yes in response to the startup that appears on the screen. This way, all deleted partitions will turn black and will be labeled as Unallocated space.
Once all secondary partitions are deleted, right click on the blue box of the primary partition to which you want to add the newly freed space (ex. C:) and select the item Extend Volume from the menu that appears. In the window that opens, click on the button NEXT twice in a row and then on that end to complete the procedure (make sure that on the second screen of the procedure, in the field Select the amount of space in MB, all free space available on the disk is selected).
The reunification process of the partitions could take a few seconds. In case one of the partitions to be deleted has not been deleted by clicking on the item Delete volume, try to format it by right clicking on it and pressing the buttons first Format e OK, then delete it following the procedure seen above.
EASEUS Partition Master
As I told you, there are programs that simplify the implementation of the procedure to reunite a partitioned hard disk, saving the data of the secondary partitions in a folder, copying them automatically to the primary one and then providing to unify the disk. Among the most effective and easy to use, I recommend EASEUS Partition Master, which is compatible with all the most popular versions of Windows and in its basic variant is completely free, but possibly it is also available in some paid editions (with prices starting from 54,95 euros) that offer a greater number of functions.
To download EaseUS Partition Master on your PC, connect to the official website of the program and click on the button Free download that you find in correspondence with the box Free, then type your e-mail address in the appropriate field that you see appear on the screen, press the button Try Partition Master Free and, subsequently, on the link Download.
A download complete, apri il .exe file obtained and, in the window you see appear on the desktop, first click on the button Yes and then on the buttons Install now, Install for free e starts.
Now that you see the main screen of the software on the screen, close the window through which you are asked if you intend to switch to the paid version, then select the drive of the primary partition of the disk from the list at the top and click on the button Merge located on the left sidebar.
In the further window that at this point is shown to you, put a check mark on the box corresponding to the partitions that you intend to merge with the primary one, make sure that in the drop-down menu Merge Partitions a the primary partition is selected and press the button OK located at the bottom right to save the settings.
Then wait for the program to check the file system of the partitions, then click the buttons Apply e Si to start the merge procedure. At the end of the procedure, inside the disk you will find a special folder containing all the files that were hosted on the secondary partition now deleted.
In the event that the operation of EaseUS Partition Master does not satisfy you, you can consider contacting another of the third party tools useful to carry out the operation object of this tutorial that I have indicated to you in my review on programs for partitioning hard disks.
How to reunite a partitioned hard drive on macOS
Now let's move on to the Mac side and let's find out, therefore, how to reunite a partitioned hard drive on macOS. You can do this by using some special tools already included in the operating system. To find out more, keep reading, you will find everything explained in detail below.
If you are using macOS, you can rejoin a partitioned hard drive using Disk Utility, the default tool of the Apple operating system through which you can manage Mac disks and partitions.
To use Disk Utility, first start the tool by selecting the relevant one icon (Quella with the disc and the stethoscope) found in the folder Other of Launchpad.
In the window that opens, select thedisk icon on which to go to act from the left sidebar (if the menu is not visible, click on the button Vista at the top left and choose the option Show sidebar from the menu that appears) and press the button Partition which is located at the top.
In the box that appears, use the pie chart to select the secondary partitions to be deleted and press the button negative (-) lead which is at the bottom left to delete them. Then, make sure that the primary partition takes up all the space of the graph (otherwise you resize it "manually") and complete the operation by pressing the buttons Apply e Partition.
After completing the above steps, within a few minutes the selected partitions will be deleted from the disk (along with all the data they contained) and the freed space will be added to the primary partition. It was easy, wasn't it?
You can reunite a partitioned hard drive on Mac also by acting from terminal, then from the command line. How you do it? I'll explain it to you right away. However, keep in mind that it is a bit more complicated than what is possible to do via the user interface and that particular attention must be paid to the commands to be given, in order to avoid deleting partitions and drives that, instead, were not touched.
That said, first start the Terminal by selecting the relevant one icon (Quella with the black folder and the line of code) found in the folder Other of Launchpad.
Now that the Terminal window is displayed, issue the command diskutil list followed by pressing the key Submit on the keyboard, in order to view the list of disks, partitions and volumes connected internally and externally to the Mac and then discover the identifier (eg. disk0s3) of the partitions on which you have to go to act.
Next, if you want to merge partitions of a disk using the file system AFPS, issue the command sudo diskutil apfs deleteContainer [partition identifier] (instead of [partition identifier] you have to enter the identifier of the partition to be deleted that you discovered earlier), in order to delete the contents of the partition. To run it you will be asked to type the administration password from the Mac.
Next, enter the command sudo diskutil eraseVolume "Free Space"% noformat% / dev / [partition identifier] (instead of [partition identifier] you must enter the identification of the partition to be deleted), to completely delete the AFPS partition.
Finally, enter the command sudo diskutil apfs resizeContainer [partition identifier to expand] 0 (instead of [partition identifier to expand] you have to enter the identifier of the partition to which you want to assign the space freed from the deleted partition), in order to expand the indicated partition using the space freed from the deleted one.
Instead, if it is your intention to go to reunite a partitioned hard drive that has been formatted in HFS / HFS +, FAT32 o other file systems, after taking note of the identifier of the partitions you are interested in proceeding as I have already explained to you, you must first enter the command diskutil erasevolume "Free Space" "" / dev / [disk] (instead of [disk] enter the name of the partition to be deleted), in order to delete the partition.
Next, type the command diskutil resizevolume / dev / [disk] R (in place of [disk] you have to enter the name of the partition to expand), in order to expand the specified partition using the space freed from the deleted one, and that's it.How to reunite a partitioned hard drive
