Do you need to install WhatsApp on your new iPhone and would you like help recover the chats you had on your old phone? If your old smartphone was also an iPhone, there's no problem. All you need to do is associate your new iPhone with the phone number and Apple ID you used on your old "melaphone" and your chat history will be automatically retrieved from iCloud.
Did you accidentally delete a chat from WhatsApp and don't know how to recover it? Don't panic! iCloud backups may also help you in this case. Before you restore them, however, you must make sure they are dated before the day you deleted the discussion you want to retrieve.
So if you want to retrieve WhatsApp iPhone messages, take five minutes off and try to follow the directions I'm about to give you: one way or another you should be able to restore the conversations you need. Just one small point before you start: When you restore a backup of WhatsApp, all conversations after WhatsApp are deleted from the application, so carefully consider all the pros and cons of the situation and choose whether or not it's worth moving forward. Then don't tell me I didn't warn you!
Recover WhatsApp messages on a new iPhone
What to do on your old iPhone
- Open WhatsApp, select the Settings tab in the lower right corner, and navigate to Chat > Chat Backup;
- Push the Backup Now button to start creating a new backup on iCloud. If you want to include videos in the backup, turn on the backup option.
If you cannot back up your conversations to iCloud, go to the Settings menu > iCloud > iCloud Drive in iOS and verify that the iCloud Drive and WhatsApp options are both active. Also go to Settings menu > iCloud and make sure that there is still some space left on your account
What to do on your new iPhone
- Make sure you have the same phone number you had on your old iPhone;
- Go to Settings > iCloud in iOS and verify that the phone is associated with the same iCloud account as the old "melafonino";
- Go to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive and verify that the iCloud Drive and WhatsApp options are both active;
- Download WhatsApp from the App Store. If you need help doing this, see my tutorial on how to download WhatsApp to iPhone;
- Launch WhatsApp and follow the application's initial setup process. After you verify your phone number, your iCloud chat backup should be automatically detected, so press the Restore Chat History button and your conversations should return to their place.
Retrieve WhatsApp messages by reinstalling the application
Want to retrieve a chat you accidentally deleted from WhatsApp? In this case, you can fix the problem by reinstalling the application and restoring the last backup in iCloud, but only if it was before the date you deleted the conversation you want to retrieve.
To find out when WhatsApp last backed up to iCloud, launch the application, select the Settings tab at the bottom right and move to the Chat > Chat Backup menu. You will find the date of the last backup in iCloud next to the Last Backup item (top).
If the backup meets the requirements you need - i.e., if it dates back before the day you deleted the WhatsApp chat you want to recover - uninstall the application from your iPhone and download it again from the App Store. To uninstall WhatsApp, all you have to do is keep your finger pressed on its icon and click on the checkmark at the top left to download it again from the App Store... well, I don't think it needs too much explanation (and you'll find everything explained in my tutorial on how to download WhatsApp on iPhone).
Once you (re)download WhatsApp to your "melaphone", launch the application, verify your mobile phone number, and agree to restore the backup from iCloud by pressing the Restore Chat History button.
If iCloud Backup is not detected, go to the Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive menu in iOS and verify that the iCloud Drive and WhatsApp options are both active.
Retrieve WhatsApp iPhone messages by restoring the phone
In the most desperate cases, those where restoring chats from iCloud doesn't work or isn't useful for your purposes (e.g., it's after the date you deleted an important conversation you want to recover), you can try to recover WhatsApp iPhone messages by restoring your phone via iTunes or iCloud.
This is a drastic measure, as a result of which all iPhone applications are returned to a previous state. But in cases of real need, it's definitely worth a try.
However, before you start, make sure your backup is recent enough (otherwise you might lose a bunch of messages and apps after the date of the restored backup).
Recover archived WhatsApp messages
Did you accidentally archive a WhatsApp chat and don't know how to restore it? Don't worry, it's a piece of cake!
All you need to do is select the WhatsApp Chat tab, drag the screen down and select the Archived Chat item that appears at the top. Then find the conversation you want to restore, swipe from right to left on its title and press the Extract button that appears on the side. Mission accomplished!
If you have accidentally archived ALL WhatsApp conversations (congratulations, it takes some skill!), go to the Settings > Chat menu of WhatsApp and press the Extract all chats from the archive at the bottom of the screen.
