How to mount TV antenna

Preliminary information

How to mount TV antenna

To begin with, a general and complete introduction to the subject is a must on my part. You must know that, if you live in a condominium, you are certainly in the best situation, as the system is completely managed by the condominium installer: all you have to do is connect a coaxial cable from one of the wall antenna sockets to the antenna socket of your TV.

However, if, as often happens, you have an independent home, you need to install the television on a camper or, perhaps, you too live in an apartment building but your television is too far from the wall sockets available in your accommodation, you must consider some different solutions, ie you have to mount a TV antenna.

However, you must keep in mind that no antenna has the power to create the signal where it does not arrive: the positioning of the antenna, following the specific suggestions that you will find in the next chapters, must in any case be such as to fully grasp even the slightest signal.

The simplest and least invasive solution to be able to receive the digital terrestrial signal is to use ainternal antenna. Through an internal antenna it is possible to "intercept" the radio and television signal arriving in the room, including that of the high definition channels.

First, you need to decide where to place the antenna. There are no precise rules, but I can give you a couple of suggestions that still need to be tested and possibly refined after a few attempts: the signal tends to reach the home through the openings and spread through the refraction on the walls, so you will need to place the antenna near a window and, if possible, away from other equipment that could cause interference.

As I told you, take these suggestions with pliers, as sometimes it can happen that, following several tests, a point apparently covered and central to the room, may turn out to be the best position for reception. To find the ideal location, you will have to make several attempts, also rotating the antenna 90 degrees, to understand which configuration guarantees you the reception of the greatest number of channels, in standard definition and in high definition, with the best quality.

All indoor antennas generally include one magnetic base or a little sticker for fixing it and a coaxial cable, which you must connect toantenna input of your decoder or your TV with built-in decoder. Some models are also supplied with supply which, optionally, you can decide to connect to a power outlet to transform thepassive to active antenna, thus amplifying the received signal.

Now that you have connected the coaxial cable, you just have to do is start one automatic search of the channels, possibly following the directions in my dedicated article, from the TV or decoder you use, and finally enjoy your TV.

How to mount external TV antenna

How to mount TV antenna

If you are willing to develop a slightly more complex system, in exchange for better reception, you can opt for a 'external TV antenna: these are devices very similar to those described in the previous chapter, with the difference that they adopt some technical measures that make them suitable for external placement.

Also in this case, the first thing to consider is the positioning: it is very important to try to place the external antenna in the highest position available, away from metal objects and devices with high energy consumption and making sure that in front of the antenna it is not there are buildings or other structures that can completely cover the reception area. Even the external antennas can be oriented horizontally or vertically: take a few attempts and evaluate which positioning guarantees you the best reception.

Usually, external antennas include one pole or wall bracket, depending on whether you want to mount them on the roof or on the balcony, and a coaxial cable resistant to bad weather or, at least, to rain. This is exactly the cable you need to connect to theantenna input of your new generation television or, possibly, to the decoder connected to it.

Personally, I advise you to direct your choice towards an external antenna equipped with protection from snow, rain and sun exposure and filter for interference due to the signal 3G / 4G / wireless: in this way you can avoid damaging the antenna due to the weather conditions and you can get a cleaner reception than the disturbances dictated by mobile networks and wireless networks.

Don't forget to proceed with the automatic scan of channels to be able to receive all the channels that you are able to "catch" with your new external antenna. If you have any doubts about this operation, feel free to consult my article dedicated to channel tuning.

How to mount a TV antenna on a camper

How to mount TV antenna

If you are thinking about a television system in your motorhome, your choice should probably fall on a 'omnidirectional antenna. This type of antennas, in fact, lends itself to being the most useful for the reception of polarized signals, both vertically and horizontally, and adapts more to the natural and artificial obstacles that can be found during the journey.

The assembly of this antenna is a slightly laborious operation: the antenna must in fact be placed on the roof of the camper, with the brackets and breadboard found inside the package. For the purely "building" aspects, I can not help but refer you to the specific fixing instructions of the product you have purchased.

As for the technical part, after placing the antenna, you have to connect it to the IN socket of the amplifier, using a coaxial cable long enough to reach the inside of the camper or, more precisely, the point where the television is located. Finally, all you have to do is connect the amplifier to the mains, using thepower pack provided, and connect another antenna cable from OUT socket of the amplifier to the input socket of the TV.

Depending on your needs, you can choose a model with adjustable amplification, via a small physical knob, or multiple outputs, to connect multiple televisions to the antenna. In conclusion, I would like to point out that, unlike home TV, when you travel in a camper for long distances, the frequencies and channels on which your favorite programs are present can vary significantly. I invite you, therefore, to repeat the tuning of the TV or decoder whenever you stop in a new place in a province or region different from the previous one, following the procedure illustrated in this article.

How to mount TV antenna amplifier

How to mount TV antenna

If you have already set up your antenna but you have noticed that the signal is a bit poor, if you notice some interruptions while watching or if some channels are a bit jerky, you can think about using a signal amplifier. As I mentioned earlier, you must remember that an amplifier can only “boost” a signal that must already be present.

Setting up a signal amplifier is easier than you might think. First, unplug yours antenna cable from the input of your TV or set-top box and connect this end you disconnected to the amplifier input socket, usually identified with the initials IN. Once this is done, connect a second antenna cable, from the OUT socket of the amplifier to the socket of the TV or decoder to which the antenna cable was connected that I told you to unplug a little while ago. Finally, connect the amplifier to the mains through the power cord which is provided.

There are different types of signal amplifier: I suggest you choose one with adjustable amplification, usually through a physical manual selector, with which you can vary the gain in deciBel, and filter 4G/LTE/GSM, to reduce interference from mobile / wireless networks. Depending on your needs, you can also consider purchasing a model with multiple output ports to distribute the television signal to multiple televisions and set-top boxes.

How to mount satellite dish

How to mount TV antenna

If digital terrestrial TV is no longer enough for you and you want to enter the world of Satellite TV, the matter becomes a bit more complicated. In fact, it is a question of abandoning your old concept of antenna and moving on to that of a parabola. Several commercial operators in the city use satellite TV in their offering, for example Sky e Tivùsat.

The satellite dish is usually sold in the form of a kit, which includes: a metal disc in iron or steel, of about 60 or 80 centimeters, the support, studs assembly andLNB, low noise converter block, an active component that has the task of amplifying, converting and routing the satellite signal along the coaxial cable that reaches the receiver.

In order to use satellite TV, after following the assembly instructions in the manual included in the package of the dish, it is necessary to point it towards the satellite Hot Bird, used for both Sky and Tivùsat broadcasts, and connect the coaxial cable to the satellite antenna input of your decoder.

If you have any doubts about pointing the satellite dish, do not hesitate to consult my guide on how to aim the satellite dish in which I have explained to you in detail how to act.
