Before explaining how to proceed in order to retrieve messages in WhatsApp, it's important to clarify a point immediately. When we talk about retrieving messages from WhatsApp, we generally refer to the ability to re-access your conversations from the popular app on your smartphone after you install or reinstall it. In other cases, however, you might be referring to the ability to retrieve messages on WhatsApp as a result of voluntary or involuntary archiving of your conversations. So find your situation among those just mentioned and follow the steps below.

Retrieve messages on WhatsApp on iPhone

Retrieve messages after installing or reinstalling the app

If you want to retrieve messages to WhatsApp because you want to install the popular app on a new iPhone you have or because you want to reinstall the app on your device, you must have a backup to succeed. To check the availability of a backup and if you want to make one right away, just take advantage of the app's cloud storage service, iCloud, which is based on Apple's cloud storage service.

You can also verify when WhatApp chat was last backed up by simply accessing your iPhone's home screen, tapping on the WhatsApp app icon, tapping on the Settings item at the bottom right, tapping on the Chat item and then tapping on the Chat Backup item and looking at the date next to the Last Backup: Attached at the top of the Chat Backup section of WhatsApp settings.

By default, WhatsApp backups to iCloud are automatically backed up at a predetermined time interval when the application is downloaded and installed. However, if you want to adjust the time interval or if you have disabled the backup feature and want to enable it again, simply tap on the Chat item attached to the application settings. In the new screen that you will now be shown tap on Chat Backup, tap on Automatic Backup and then indicate whether you want to back up the chat on a daily, weekly or monthly basis by selecting the Daily, Weekly or Monthly option respectively. If the Disabled option is selected and you have disabled chat backup in the past, you can activate this feature by simply selecting one of the options I just mentioned. You can also choose whether or not to include videos in your chat backups by turning the switch next to the Include video item in the Chat Backup section of the application settings to ON or OFF, respectively. As an alternative to automatic backup, you can "manually" back up WhatsApp's chat by pressing the Back Up Now item that is always attached to the Backup Chat screen in the application's settings.

Once you've verified the availability of a backup, you can take action and retrieve messages on WhatsApp. All you need to do is install or reinstall WhatsApp on the iPhone associated with the same Apple number and ID as the one that generated the backup.

After launching the application and running the on-screen configuration wizard to verify your phone number, WhatsApp will automatically detect the availability of the backup and ask you whether you want to restore it or not. You can now retrieve messages about WhatsApp on your iPhone by simply tapping on the Restore Chat History item shown on screen.

You can then wait a few minutes for the restore process to complete, after which you can easily access the WhatsApp conversations that you backed up to your melaphone.

Retrieve messages after archiving conversations

If you are interested in figuring out how to retrieve messages on WhatsApp on your iPhone because you have intentionally or erroneously archived one or more conversations with the popular messaging app, the first thing you need to do is to start the popular app by tapping on its home screen icon, tap on the Chat item at the bottom, scroll down the screen that is shown to the bottom, and tap on the Archived Chat item.

Now swipe to the left on the title of the thread you want to retrieve and then press the blue Extract button from the menu that will be shown on the side.

Retrieve messages after installing or reinstalling the app

If you want to retrieve messages on WhatsApp because you want to install the popular app on a new Android smartphone you have or because you want to reinstall the app on your device, you must have a backup to succeed. To check the availability of a backup and if you want to make one right away, just take advantage of the special feature attached to the app and based on Google Drive, Google's cloud storage service.

You can also verify when WhatApp chat was last backed up by simply accessing your Android smartphone's home screen, tapping on the WhatsApp app icon, tapping on the three-dot icon in the top right corner, selecting Settings from the menu that appears, tapping on Chat and Calls, then tapping on Chat Backup and then tapping on Chat Backup and taking a look at the date next to Last Backup: Attached at the top of the Chat Backup section of WhatsApp Settings.

By default, whatsApp messages on Google Drive are automatically backed up every day. To change this setting and/or force the creation of a new backup in the WhatsApp Settings menu, tap on Chat and Calls, tap on the Backup item, and then select the Google Drive item. Now choose whether to backup on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and you're done. If you also want to include videos in your backups, move the backup toggle in the WhatsApp Settings menu to ON. As an alternative to automatic backup, you can "manually" back up WhatsApp chat by pressing the Back Up Chat button attached to the application settings.

Once you have verified the availability of a backup, you can take the actual action and retrieve messages in WhatsApp. Then proceed to install or reinstall WhatsApp on your Android smartphone associated with the same number and the same Google account as the one that generated the backup on Google drive.
