Use Facebook chat to chat with friends, family and colleagues and sometimes make appointments or receive important information via Facebook. Recently, however, you have mistakenly deleted some conversations and now you'd like to see if you can deal with it so you can read it all over again at any time. I'll give you some good news, you can.
To succeed "in the enterprise" you have two different solutions at your disposal. The first method consists of trying to search through the archived chats, both from computers (via web browser) and from smartphones and tablets (via the Messenger app). A second method involves downloading a backup copy (in this case you can only act from a computer, using the desktop version of the social network) of all your data that you have shared on Facebook over time. Both solutions can be effective but, you should know, to make sure that this is the case, you need a minimum amount of patience on your part.
We solve your problem!
Having clarified this, if you are really interested in finding out what steps to take to try to retrieve Facebook conversations, I suggest you take a few minutes off, make yourself comfortable in front of your trusty computer and read the directions below. I am sure that in the end you will be satisfied and that if necessary you will also be ready and willing to give all the explanations of the case to your friends wishing to receive a similar tip. What do you say, shall we bet?
Retrieve Facebook conversations from archived chats
The first thing I suggest you do to try and retrieve your Facebook conversations is to take a look through the archived chats.
In case you were wondering, the archived conversations are all those conversations made through the social network chat that seem to have been deleted but which in reality have simply been "shelved" and therefore no longer appear in the main menu of social network messages but can always be re-read and restored.
To try to retrieve Facebook conversations from archived chats from your computer, the first step you need to take is to log into the social network. To do this, open your favorite web browser, type www.facebook.com in the address bar and then press the Enter button on your keyboard so that you can immediately connect to the main web page of the service. Then type in your Facebook login details by filling in the fields shown on the screen and then click on the Sign In button.
When you're logged in, click on the comic book icon in the top right corner and select the Show All icon attached to the pane displayed on the screen. Click on the Other item in the top left corner and select Archived from the menu that appears. This will allow you to view all the Facebook conversations that have been archived, that no longer appear in the main list of messages written or received on the social network and that therefore seem to be no longer available.
At this point, all you have to do is move the cursor to the conversation of your interest attached to the left sidebar of the new screen displayed and click on the Cancel archive button, which shows a small upward arrow at the bottom right, under the name of the other person (or page) or other people who have participated in the chat.
After clicking the button, the previously archived conversation will be moved to the main section of Facebook from which you usually view messages exchanged with other users and pages.
As an alternative to the procedure I have just indicated, you can also retrieve Facebook conversations by accessing the Archived section, pressing on the conversion you want to act on, bringing the mouse cursor on the icon depicting a gear wheel located at the top of the screen, clicking on it and choosing the Cancel Storage item from the menu that is shown.
Again, once you cancel the archiving, the conversation will be moved to the main section of Facebook from where you usually view messages exchanged with other users and pages.
In both cases, before retrieving the Facebook conversations as I have indicated, you can make sure that the chat session you are about to restore is actually the one you are interested in by pressing on it and taking a look at the chat history attached to the right side of the displayed screen.
Smartphone and tablet
Want to try to retrieve Facebook conversations from your smartphone or tablet? If so, just use the Facebook Messenger app available for Android, iOS and Windows Phone.
To retrieve Facebook conversations from your mobile phone, first log into the home screen of your smartphone or tablet and then press the Messenger app icon. On the screen that's displayed, type the name of the person or page you previously had a conversation with in the search field at the top of the screen, then click on the corresponding result in the list that's displayed. Once you have done so, you will be shown a new screen showing the conversation you previously had.
You will then be able to consult the entire chat session by swiping from bottom to bottom and eventually you can reply using the text box at the bottom or using one of the various communication tools made available by the social network.
Please note that if you reply to a chat session that was previously stored via the Messenger app, it will automatically restore it and you'll find it in your recent conversations when you return to the main screen of the app and once you're logged in to the desktop version of Facebook.
Retrieve Facebook conversations from the backup copy
The solution to retrieve the Facebook conversations I just suggested has not proved effective? Then you can try accessing your past conversations on the social network again from the backup copy of your Facebook account.
A backup copy of your Facebook account allows you to always have access to information, photos, posts, messages exchanged with friends and anything else you have chosen to make available on the popular social network. To see the complete list of data that you can consult by creating a backup copy of your account on the social network, click here to access the Facebook Help Center information page.
To try to retrieve Facebook conversations from the backup copy of your account, the first step you need to take is to login to the social network. To do this, follow the directions above.
Next, press on the downward arrow icon in the top right corner of the blue Facebook bar and click on the Settings item attached to the menu that is shown. Then click on Download a copy first and then on Start my archive.
When the archive containing a copy of your data on Facebook will be ready, you will receive the link to download it directly by e-mail to the address you used to access the social network. Please note that depending on the amount of data, this may take longer than one day.
Once you have obtained a backup copy of your data, you will be able to take action and then access the content of the archive, consult it carefully and, consequently, try to retrieve Facebook conversations.
