Can't find some of the audio files that a friend sent you on WhatsApp and would you like to see if there is a way to retrieve them "on the fly" without having to scroll through the entire conversation? Did you accidentally delete some voice messages from a WhatsApp chat and would you like to see if there is a way to retrieve them? Don't worry, I can help you.
If you give me some of your precious free time, I can explain how to retrieve WhatsApp audio. I can already tell you that the procedure is feasible both from a smartphone and from a computer, although in the latter case the only thing you can do is to retrieve the audio files within the conversation and not also for deleted voice messages, unless you use special programs (which, however, serve to intervene on the phone and not on the computer memory).
Before you get scared and think about what complicated operations to perform, I would like to point out that you don't have to do anything particularly difficult or out of your reach. All the operations to perform are extremely simple, even for those who are less experienced in new technologies. Do you try as well? Position yourself nice and comfortable, concentrate on reading the following and put my advice into practice. I sincerely hope that, in the end, you will feel very happy and satisfied with what you have learned and obtained.
How to recover WhatsApp audio from your smartphone
Interested in understanding how to recover WhatsApp audio from your smartphone? Then follow the instructions for Android and iPhone below to learn how to recover audio files and voice notes in a conversation and how to recover deleted messages.
Retrieve audio WhatsApp Android
If you are using an Android smartphone, to recover audio files sent or received in a conversation, the first essential step you need to take is to take your device, unlock it, go to the home screen and select the WhatsApp icon.
Then go to the Chat section of the application and select the conversation you are interested in. After that, tap on the user or group name (top) and tap on Media, then make sure Media is selected (on the new screen that appears) and scroll through the list of received and sent media until you see the media file you are interested in. You can easily distinguish audio files from others because they are marked with a headset icon.
Once you have done so, press on the file to play it back. If you want to forward the file to someone else, press the arrow symbol at the top right of the screen and choose the contact you are interested in. To open the file in another app or to share it, press the three dots vertical button at the top right of the screen, select Share and then the app of your interest from the menu that opens.
Also after clicking on the button with the three dots vertically, selecting Show in chat you can, instead, view the location where the file is located within the conversation.
In addition to what I just told you and/or if you want to retrieve your voice notes, you can get to the location where they are saved on your phone by default, but you need a file manager to do that, like the Google Files app.
Once you open the file manager, select either Internal Memory or SD memory at the bottom, open the WhatsApp folder on the next screen, and select Media. At this point, if you want to recover audio files, you must select the WhatsApp Audio folder, and if you want to recover voice messages, you must navigate to the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder.
Then, select the subfolder you are interested in, tap on the down arrow next to the audio file you want to open or copy and select, from the menu that appears, the Open with (to open the file in another app to choose later) or Copy to (to copy the file to a different location than the current one).
If you would like to play the file before opening or copying it so that you can verify that it is the item you are really interested in, simply select its icon.
Recover Deleted Android WhatsApp Audio Recovery
Now let's see what to do in the case of deleted audio files and voice messages. In order to recover them on Android, you can take advantage of the backups of your conversations. So, if you have previously enabled WhatsApp chat backups on your mobile phone (on Google Drive and/or locally), as I explained in my tutorial on the subject, you can easily recover them using this tool. In what way? I'll explain it to you right away.
First, make sure your WhatsApp backup date is earlier than the date you deleted the audio file or voice note you are interested in. To do so, open WhatsApp on your smartphone, press the three dots vertical button in the upper right corner and select Settings from the menu that appears. Then select Chat, then Backup chat and check the date and time that you find in the Last backup.
If the backup date is earlier than the date you deleted your audio files and voice notes and if backups are made via Google Drive, do the following: delete WhatsApp from your device (following the instructions in my post on how to uninstall Android apps), download the app from the Play Store again, launch it and follow the initial setup procedure proposed to you.
After verifying your phone number, when asked if you want to restore chats from previous backup data, accept. Finally, choose the name and photo you want to use on WhatsApp and you're done.
Now, by going to WhatsApp's Chat section, you should be able to see all the conversations you had until the backup date and, consequently, you should also find the audio files and voice clips, which you can easily find as I explained in the previous chapter.
If, on the other hand, you want to restore a locally executed WhatsApp backup, do this: Log in to the Google Drive management panel and remove WhatsApp from the list of applications that have access to the service. This will force WhatsApp to "look" on the phone memory (or SD) and not on the cloud to search for backup files. Next, follow the instructions I provided earlier about removing and reinstalling WhatsApp, the procedure is the same.
Using local files, you can also recover backups prior to the most recent one, I explained how in my tutorial on how to recover WhatsApp conversations on Android.
Retrieve WhatsApp iPhone Audio
Do you own an iPhone and would like to understand how to recover WhatsApp audio in that case? Then I'll tell you how to do it right now, explaining how to retrieve audio files within a conversation.
To begin, start WhatsApp by tapping on its home screen icon. Once you see the main screen of the application, go to the Chat tab, select the conversation you are interested in and tap on the name of the person or group at the top of the display.
Now, select Media, links and documents from the new screenshot, then the Media tab and locate the audio file you are interested in by scrolling through the media list: you can easily recognize it because its icon shows an audio track. Once you've found it, tap on it.
Proceeding as I have just indicated, the playback of the file will start immediately. If the media in question is the one you were really interested in finding, pause playback. Press the Pause button, then press the share icon (the one with the rectangle and arrow) on the right (also at the bottom) and select Forward or Share from the menu that appears: in the first case, you can forward the audio file to another conversation; in the second case, you can open it or share it through another app.
Retrieve WhatsApp Deleted iPhone Audio
If, on the other hand, you are interested in understanding how to recover deleted WhatsApp audio files from your iPhone, both for "real" audio files and voice messages, the procedure you must follow is to use backups again. So, if you previously enabled chat backup, which on the "melafonino" is done through iCloud (as I had the opportunity to explain in detail in my tutorial on the subject), you can recover what you are interested in by proceeding as follows.
First, make sure the date of the last backup is before the date the audio file or voice note was sent to you. To be sure, start WhatsApp on your smartphone, tap on the Settings item at the bottom of the screen, then tap on Chat on the new screen and then tap on Chat Backup.
Check, then, what is written in the Last Backup: if the backup date is before the audio date, uninstall WhatsApp from your phone (if you don't know how to do it, follow the instructions in my post on how to uninstall iPhone apps), download the application again from the App Store, start it and follow the initial configuration procedure that is proposed to you.
After verifying your phone number, when you're asked if you want to restore chats from your previous backup data, you can do so. Finally, choose the name and photo you want to use for your account.
Now, by going to WhatsApp's Chat section, you will have access to all the conversations you had until the backup date, so you should also find the audio files and voice messages you are interested in. To find them quickly, follow the directions I gave you in the previous chapter.
How to recover WhatsApp audio from your computer
As I told you at the beginning of this guide, recovering WhatsApp audio is also possible from a computer, only if the audio files have not been deleted. To find out how to do this, first launch the WhatsApp client available for Windows and MacOS or connect to the web version of the popular messaging service.
In all three cases, considering that the service only works from your computer if the smartphone on which the WhatsApp app is installed is connected to the Internet, if you haven't already done so, it scans the QR code displayed on your PC screen. To do this, open WhatsApp on your smartphone, go to Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop > Scan QR Code and frame the code that appears in the WhatsApp window on your PC with your mobile phone camera. Find more details about the entire process in my WhatsApp for PC tutorial.
Now that you see the WhatsApp screen, locate the conversation with the audio file you are interested in in the list on the left, click on it and click the name of the contact or group you are interested in, in the upper right corner.
Then click on the Media, links and documents link, select the Media tab and locate the audio file you are interested in: you can easily recognize it because it is marked with an icon with headphones.
If you want to play the audio file directly from WhatsApp, click above. If you want to download it to your computer, click the down arrow button (top right) and click the comic book symbol (if available) to view its location within the conversation.
If you want, you can also forward the message by clicking the right arrow icon at the top and then selecting the contact you are interested in.
WhatsApp Audio Recovery Programs
In addition to what I told you in the previous lines, to recover WhatsApp audio, especially deleted audio, you can also rely on certain computer programs designed to recover deleted data.
