How to recover WhatsApp audio from smartphone
Are you interested in understanding how to recover WhatsApp audio from your smartphone? Then follow the instructions for Android and iPhone below to learn how to recover audio files and voice notes from conversations, and how to attempt to recover deleted messages.
Recover WhatsApp Android Audio
If you are using an Android smartphone, to recover audio files sent or received in a conversation, the first essential step you need to take is to take your device, unlock it, go to the home screen, and select the WhatsAppicon.
Next, head to the Chat section of the app and select the conversation you are interested in. Then, tap on the name of the user or group (at the top) and tap on Media, then make sure that Media is selected (on the new screen) and scroll through the list of received and sent media until you see the one related to the audio file you are interested in. You can easily distinguish audio files from the others because they are marked with a headphone icon.
Once you've done that, press on the file to play it. If you want to forward the file to someone else, click on the arrow symbol in the top right of the screen and choose the contact you are interested in. To open the file in another app or to share it, click on the button with the three vertical dots at the top right, select Share and then theapp of interest from the menu that opens.
Always after pressing the button with the three vertical dots, selecting the item Show in chat you can, however, view the location where the file is located within the conversation.
In addition to the above, if you want to recover voice notes, you can also reach the location where these files are saved on the phone by default: to do this, however, you need a file manager, as in the case of the Google Files app.
Once you have opened the file manager, select either Internal Storage or SD below, open the WhatsApp folder on the next screen, and select Media. Now, if you want to recover audio files, select the WhatsApp Audio folder, and if you want to recover voice messages, go to the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder.
Next, select the subfolder you are interested in, tap the down arrow next to the audio file you want to open or copy, and select Open With (to open the file in another app of your choice) or Copy To (to copy the file to a location other than the current location) from the menu that appears.
If you would like to play the file before opening or copying it, to make sure it is the item you are interested in, simply select its icon.
Recover deleted WhatsApp audio on Android
Let's now see what to do in the case of deleted audio files and voice messages. In order to recover them on Android, you can take advantage of conversation backups. So, if you had previously enabled WhatsApp chat backups on your phone (on Google Drive and/or locally), as I explained in my tutorial on the matter, you can easily recover them by taking advantage of that tool. How? I'll explain it right now.
First, make sure that the date of your WhatsApp backup is prior to the date you deleted the audio file or voice note you are interested in: to do this, open WhatsApp on your smartphone, press the button with the three vertical dots in the top right corner, and select Settings from the menu that appears. Next, select Chats, then Backup Chats, and check the date and time stamp next to the word Last Backup.
If the backup date is earlier than the date on which you deleted audio files and voice notes, and if the backups are made via Google Drive, proceed as follows: delete WhatsApp from your device (following the instructions in my post on how to uninstall Android apps), download the app again from the Play Store (following the instructions in my guide on the subject), launch it and follow the initial configuration process that is proposed.
After verifying your phone number, when you're asked if you want to restore chats from previous backup data, accept. Finally, choose the name and photo you want to use on WhatsApp and you are done.
Now, if you go to the Chat section of WhatsApp, you should find all of your chats up to the date of the backup, including audio files and voice clips, which you can easily find as I explained in the previous chapter.
If you would like to restore a WhatsApp backup that was made locally, do the following: go to your Google Drive dashboard and remove WhatsApp from the list of applications that have access to the service. This will force WhatsApp to "look" on your phone's memory (or SD card) and not in the cloud for backup files. Next, follow the instructions I gave earlier about removing and reinstalling WhatsApp, the process is the same.
By using local files, you can also recover backups that predate the most recent one, I have explained how in my tutorial on how to recover WhatsApp conversations on Android.

Do you own an iPhone and would like to understand how to recover WhatsApp audio if you do? Then I'll tell you how to do it right now by showing you how to recover audio files from a conversation.
To begin, start WhatsApp by tapping on the WhatsApp icon on your home screen. Once you see the main screen of the application, go to the Chat tab, select the conversation you are interested in and tap on the name of the person or group at the top of the display.
Then, select Media , links and documents from the new screen, then the Media tab and locate the audio file you are interested in by scrolling through the media list: you can easily recognize it as its icon depicts an audio track. After finding it, tap on it.
Proceeding as I have just indicated, it will immediately start playing the file. If the media in question is the one you really wanted to find, pause playback by pressing the Pause button, then tap on theshare icon (the one with the rectangle and arrow) located on the right (always at the bottom) and select, from the menu that appears, the item Forward or Share: in the first case, you can forward the audio file in another conversation, in the second, you can open it or share it through another app.
Recover deleted iPhone WhatsApp audio
If, on the other hand, you are interested in understanding how to recover deleted WhatsApp audio from your iPhone, both for "real" audio files and for voice messages, the procedure you need to follow involves the use of backups. So, if you had previously enabled the backup of chats, which on the "applephone" is through iCloud (as I explained in detail in my tutorial on the subject), you can recover what interests you by proceeding as indicated below.
First of all, make sure that the date of the last backup is prior to the one when the audio file or voice note was sent to you. To make sure, start WhatsApp on your smartphone, tap on the Settings tab at the bottom of the screen, tap on the Chat tab in the new screen, and then tap on Backup Chats.
If the date of the backup is earlier than the date of the audio, uninstall WhatsApp from your phone (if you do not know how to do this, follow the instructions in my post on how to uninstall iPhone apps), re-download the application from the App Store (following the instructions in my guide on how to download WhatsApp on iPhone), launch it, and follow the initial configuration process that is proposed.
After verifying your phone number, when you are asked if you want to restore chats from your previous backup data, go ahead and agree. Finally, choose the name and photo you want to use for your account.
Now, if you go to the Chat section of WhatsApp, you will have access to all of your conversations up to the date of the backup, so you should also find the audio files and voice messages you are interested in. To quickly locate them, follow the directions I provided in the previous chapter.
How to recover WhatsApp audio from your computer
As I mentioned at the beginning of this guide, recovering WhatsApp audio is also possible from a computer, but only for audio files and only if they have not been deleted. To find out how to do this, first launch the WhatsApp client for Windows and MacOS, or connect to the web version of the popular messaging service.
In all three cases, since the service only works on your computer if your smartphone with the WhatsApp app is connected to the internet, if you have not already done so, scan the QR code that appears on your PC screen. To do this, open WhatsApp on your smartphone, go to Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop > Scan QR code and scan the code that appears in the WhatsApp window on your PC with your phone's camera. You can find more details on the entire process in my tutorial on how to use WhatsApp for PC.
Now that you see the WhatsApp screen, locate the conversation containing the audio file you are interested in in the list on the left, click on it, and click on the name of the contact or group you are interested in at the top right.
Next, click on the Media , Links and Documents link, select the Media tab, and locate the audio file you are interested in, which you can easily recognize by its headset icon.
If you want to play the audio file directly from WhatsApp, click on it. If you would like to download it to your computer, click the down arrow button (upper right), and click the balloon symbol (if available) to view its location in the conversation.
If you wish, you can also forward the message by clicking on the right arrow icon at the top and selecting the contact you are interested in.
