Are you having trouble finding some audio files sent to you by a friend on WhatsApp and would like to see if there is a way to retrieve them "on the fly" without having to scroll through the whole conversation? Have you accidentally deleted some voice messages from a WhatsApp chat and want to know if there is a way to recover them? Don't worry, I can help you.
If you give me some of your precious free time, I can show you how to recover WhatsApp audio. I'll tell you that the procedure is feasible both from smartphones and computers, although in the latter case the only thing you can do is to recover the audio files within the conversation and not the deleted voice messages, unless you use special programs (which, of course, are used to work on the phone and not on the computer memory).
Before you get scared and think about who knows what complicated operations to perform, I want to point out that you do not have to do anything particularly difficult or out of your reach: all the operations to be performed are extremely simple, even for those less experienced in matters of new technologies. How to recover WhatsApp audio from smartphone
Are you interested to know how to recover WhatsApp audio from your smartphone? Then follow the Android and iPhone instructions below to know how to recover audio files and voice memos from conversations, and how to try to recover deleted messages.
Recover WhatsApp Audio on Android
If you are using an Android smartphone, to recover audio files sent or received in a conversation, the first essential step you need to take is to grab your device, unlock it, go to the home screen and select the WhatsApp icon.
Next, head to the chat section of the app and select the conversation you're interested in. Next, tap on the user or group name (at the top) and tap on Media, then make sure Media is selected (on the new screen) and scroll through the list of received and sent media until you see the one related to the audio file you're interested in. You can easily distinguish the audio files from the others because they are marked with a headphone icon.
Once you have done this, click on the file to play it. If you want to forward the file to someone else, click on the arrow symbol at the top right of the screen and choose the contact you are interested in. To open the file in another app or share it, press the button with the three vertical dots at the top right, select Share and then the app you are interested in from the menu that opens.
Always after pressing the button with the three vertical dots, selecting the option Show in chat you can, however, see the location where the file is located within the conversation.
In addition to the above, if you want to recover the voice memos, you can also get to the location where these files are saved on the phone by default: for this, however, you need a file manager, as is the case of the app Google Files.
Once you've opened the file manager, select Internal Storage or SD below, open the WhatsApp folder on the next screen and select Media. Now, if you want to recover audio files, select the WhatsApp Audio folder, and if you want to recover voice messages, go to the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder.
Next, select the subfolder you're interested in, press the down arrow next to the audio file you want to open or copy, and select Open with (to open the file in another app of your choice) or Copy to (to copy the file to a location other than the current one) from the menu that appears.
If you want to play the file before opening or copying it, to make sure it's the item you're interested in, simply select its icon.
Recover deleted audio from WhatsApp on Android
Now let's see what to do in case of deleted audio files and voicemails. To recover them on Android, you can take advantage of conversation backups. So, if you had previously enabled backups of WhatsApp chats on your phone (on Google Drive and/or locally), as I explained in my tutorial about it, you can easily recover them by taking advantage of that tool. How? I'll explain it right now.
First of all, make sure that the date of your WhatsApp backup is before the date you deleted the audio file or voice memo you're interested in: to do this, open WhatsApp on your smartphone, press the button with the three vertical dots in the top right corner and select Settings from the menu that appears. Then select Chats, then Chats Backup, and mark the date and time next to the word Last Backup.
If the date of the backup is before the date you deleted the audio files and voice memos, and if the backups are made through Google Drive, proceed as follows: delete WhatsApp from your device (following the instructions in my post on how to uninstall Android apps), download the app again from the Play Store (following the instructions in my guide on the subject), launch it and follow the initial setup process that is proposed.
After verifying your phone number, when asked if you want to restore chats from the previous backup data, accept. Finally, choose the name and photo you want to use on WhatsApp and that's it.
Now, if you go to the chats section of WhatsApp, you should find all your chats up to the date of the backup, including audio files and voice clips, which you can easily find as I explained in the previous chapter.
If you want to restore a locally backed up WhatsApp, do the following: go to the Google Drive dashboard and remove WhatsApp from the list of apps that have access to the service. This will force WhatsApp to "search" the phone's memory (or SD card) and not the cloud for the backup files. Then follow the instructions I gave earlier about deleting and reinstalling WhatsApp, the process is the same.
Using local files, you can also recover backups prior to the most recent one, I have explained how in my tutorial on how to recover WhatsApp conversations on Android.
Recover WhatsApp audio on iPhone
Do you have an iPhone and would like to know how to recover WhatsApp audio if you have it? Then I'll tell you how to do it right now by showing you how to recover audio files from a conversation.
To start with, launch WhatsApp by tapping the WhatsApp icon on your home screen. Once you see the main screen of the app, head to the Chat tab, select the conversation you're interested in and tap the name of the person or group at the top of the screen.
Next, select Media , links and documents on the new screen, then the Media tab and locate the audio file you're interested in by scrolling through the media list: you can easily recognize it because its icon represents an audio track. After finding it, click on it.
Proceeding as I have just indicated, it will immediately start playing the file. If the media in question is the one you really wanted to find, pause the playback by pressing the Pause button, then tap on theshare icon (the one with the rectangle and the arrow) located on the right (always at the bottom) and select, from the menu that appears, the Forward or Share option: in the first case, you can forward the audio file in another conversation, in the second, you can open it or share it through another app.
Recover deleted WhatsApp audios from iPhone
If, on the other hand, what you're interested in is how to recover deleted WhatsApp audio from your iPhone, both for "real" audio files and for voice messages, the procedure you need to follow involves the use of backups. So, if you had previously enabled the backup of chats, which on the "applephone" is through iCloud (as I explained in detail in my tutorial on the subject), you can recover what you are interested in proceeding as follows.
First of all, make sure that the date of the last backup is before the date of sending the audio file or voice memo. To make sure, launch WhatsApp on your smartphone, tap the Settings tab at the bottom of the screen, tap the Chats tab on the new screen, and then tap Backup Chats.
If the backup date is before the audio date, uninstall WhatsApp from your phone (if you don't know how to do this, follow the instructions in my post on how to uninstall apps on iPhone), re-download the app from the App Store (following the instructions in my guide on how to download WhatsApp on iPhone), launch it and follow the suggested initial setup process.
After verifying your phone number, when asked if you want to restore chats from your previous backup, go ahead and accept. Lastly, choose the name and photo you want to use for your account.
Now, if you go to the WhatsApp chat section, you'll have access to all your chats up to the date of the backup, so you should also find the audio files and voicemails you're interested in. To locate them quickly, follow the directions I gave you in the previous chapter.
How to recover WhatsApp audios from computer
As I mentioned at the beginning of this guide, recovering WhatsApp audio is also possible from a computer, but only for audio files and only if they have not been deleted. To find out how to do this, you first need to launch the WhatsApp client for Windows and macOS, or connect to the web version of the popular messaging service.
In all three cases, since the service only works on your computer if your smartphone with the WhatsApp app is connected to the internet, if you haven't already done so, scan the QR code that appears on your PC screen. To do this, open WhatsApp on your smartphone, go to Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop > Scan QR code and scan the code that appears in the WhatsApp window on your PC with your phone's camera. You can find more details about the whole process in my tutorial on how to use WhatsApp for PC.
Now that you see the WhatsApp screen, locate the conversation containing the audio file you're interested in in the list on the left, click on it and click on the name of the contact or group you're interested in on the top right.
Then click the Media , links and documents link, select the Media tab and locate the audio file you're interested in, which you can easily recognize by its headphone icon.
If you want to play the audio file directly from WhatsApp, click on it. If you want to download it to your computer, click on the down arrow button (top right), and click on the globe symbol (if available) to see its location in the conversation.
If you wish, you can also forward the message by clicking the right arrow icon at the top and selecting the contact you are interested in.
