Read broken DVDs on Windows

Are you using a Windows PC and would like to find out what resources you have on your own to be able to read damaged DVDs? Then rely on the tools that you find indicated below and you will see that in no time you will be able to cope with the thing, or at least I hope so, taking into account what was said at the beginning.

Rizone CD-DVD Repair

Are you using a PC with Windows installed on it? The problem, as I told you at the beginning of the guide, could be related to the driver issue. To resolve, the best advice I can give you is to turn to Rizone CD-DVD Repair, a free program that, in fact, allows you to repair DVDs, but also "normal" CDs, which do not work well, making them recognized correctly by the system. If the disk is not read because the CD / DVD drive has "disappeared" but is not physically damaged, you will certainly be able to solve your problem with this program. Here's how it works.

The first step you need to take is to connect to the download page of the program and click on the link that you find corresponding to the item Download down. Then extract the compressed archive obtained in any position on your computer and start the .exe file inside it to install the program.

Then click on Run, Then Si and, in the window that opens, check the box next to the item I accept the agreement to accept the conditions of use of the program then click on Next, its install and Finish.

Then start the program by recalling it from Start menuclick your Si, press the button Repair DVD Drives and wait a few moments for the repair process to be started and completed. Then click on the menu Fillet in the upper left part of the software window and presses on Reboot Windows to restart the computer and make sure that the changes are actually applied.

When you log into Windows again, if all went well, the CD / DVD players that were previously no longer recognized by the system should be working properly again. Make sure, by going to the computer resources (Start> This PC, if you use Windows 10/8; Start> Computer, if you are using Windows 7 / Vista; or Start> My Computer, if you use Windows XP) and checking that in the list of devices with removable storage there is the drive that was not working before.

If you are interested in this, I would like to point out that in addition to repairing CD and DVD players that do not work well, Rizone CD-DVD Repair also restores the autoplay function of the disks and disables it for less secure devices, such as pens. USB, which may contain viruses.

You can also disable these additional features of the program by removing the check mark from the items Just Repair and subsequently from Reset Autorun settings (to restore autoplay) or from Protect against Autorun parasites (for disabling autoplay for "dangerous" devices) before clicking on Repair CD-DVD. Easier than that?

The problem is not the DVD player but the disk itself which appears to be damaged? In this specific case I suggest you contact DVDisaster. It is a no-cost program no longer in development for Windows but still fully functional which, in fact, allows you to read damaged DVDs and CDs by fetching the data stored in it and then saving everything on the computer, in the form of ISO image, so you can still access it. It is very easy to use, free and in almost all cases it is very effective.

To use it, connect to the download page of the program and click on the button I accept and then on that Download. When the download is complete, start the .exe file obtained, click on Si and, in the window you see appear on the screen, press the button OK to select the use of the city language and then presses on NEXT three consecutive times, on Install and to conclude press on end.

Now, open the program by double clicking on the relative icon that has been added to the desktop, then insert the disk whose contents you cannot see in the PC reader and click on the button Read that you find in the right part of the program window to first try to read the contents of the disc and create an ISO image of the same.

At the end of the procedure, if no further hitches have arisen, you can therefore create a working copy of the same, without errors, of the original disk. To do this, click on the button Crea which is in the right part of the program window.

Once this step is also completed, press the button Repair that you always find on the right. The repaired ISO image of the disk inserted in the computer will be saved in the position of the same indicated in the upper left part of the DVDisaster window and you can then eventually burn it to a new disk.

Read broken DVDs on Mac

Do you own a Mac and are having trouble reading the DVD you inserted into the player connected to your computer? If so, try the remedies for reading damaged DVDs that I have provided below. I sincerely hope they can be useful to you.

The first of the useful resources for macOS that I want to advise you to use is FileSalvage. This is a tool with which you can recover deleted files from all drives and volumes that the Mac can access. It is therefore particularly useful for being able to read damaged DVDs as it allows you to recover the content so that you can possibly burn it on a new medium or in any case save it on your computer. Unfortunately it is paid but you can download the free trial version (the one I used) to test its operation.

You ask me how to use it? I'll point it out to you right away. First, go to the application download page and click on the button Download here placed in the center. When the download is complete, open the file in .dmg format obtained and drag the software icon into the folder Applications to install the software on your Mac.

Once this is done, go to the folder Applications macOS, right-click on the program icon and then press on open for two consecutive times in order to start the application, however, going around the limitations imposed by the Cupertino company against unauthorized developers.

Once the FileSalvage window appears on your desktop, select the tab Drivers at the top left of the same and presses on the disk in relation to which it is your intention to intervene from the list that appears. Then select the options Search for deleted and regular files e Search for embedded files that are at the bottom in order to perform a complete search of the files.

Then click on the button Start Scan which is further down, enter the password for your user account on the Mac and wait for the disk analysis procedure to start and complete. Next, you will be shown the total number of items on the disk that the program was able to locate and that can be recovered together with the overall list of all files.

Then select the items you want to recover and then click the button Recover which is located at the bottom. To complete the procedure, you just have to do the purchase of the product key of the program, indicate the destination location of the files and wait for them to be saved on the Mac.

Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery

Another great program you can appeal to in order to be able to read damaged DVDs again by recovering the files saved on them is Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery. It is a software for macOS (actually a version for Windows is also available) used for the purpose that acts on traces and bad sectors without compromising the integrity of the data and without causing further damage to the disk. It is paid but you can download a free trial version (the one I used to write this guide) which requires the entry of the product key during the recovery phase.

To serve, first connect to the download page of the program and click on the button Free Download. Once the download is complete, extract the ZIP archive obtained in any macOS location, open the .dmg file that was inside it and drag the program icon into the folder Applications.

Then go to the folder Applications on your Mac, right-click on the program icon and select open for two consecutive times in order to start the app, however, going around Apple's restrictions on unauthorized developers.

Then type the password for your user account on Mac and then click on the button I agree in the window that you see appear on the desk in such a way as to accept the terms of use of the program and wait for a few sitters for it to be loaded.

Now, deselect the type of file you do not intend to recover from those attached to the Stellar Phoenix data Recovery window and click on the button Following bottom right. By default, all items are selected: Documents, Email, Video, Audio e Gallery.

Now select the disk for which you intend to act among the devices attached to the section Select location and then click on the button Scan which is below. If you can't see the disk among the devices connected to your computer, click on directional arrows that you find on the right and / or left in the program window.

When the scan procedure is complete, click OK in response to the warning that appears on the screen indicating the completion of the operation, then select the items you want to recover from the main window of the software and press the button Recover. Then make the purchase of the product key of the program, type it in the appropriate field and wait for the recovery procedure to be started and completed.
