How to merge two partitions

Preliminary operation

Considering that the unification of two partitions is an operation that, unless you resort to the use of some specific programs (as we will see together later), involves the elimination of all the data present in the secondary partitions, I suggest strongly recommend that you create a backup of the data present on the latter.

Taking into account the fact that the partitioning of a hard disk is an activity that, however simple (for the user) it may be, still involves a small percentage of risk, I suggest you also make a backup of the data on the partition. primary.

If you don't know how to create a backup copy of your data, as far as it concerns Windows you can refer to the instructions in my tutorial on how to backup your PC. If, on the other hand, you have a Mac, you can read my tutorial dedicated to how to make a Mac backup.

Merge two partitions with Windows

You are using a PC Windows and you would like to understand how to merge two partitions? Then continue reading what is reported below. In fact, in the following lines you will find explained how to carry out the operation in question by exploiting Disk management, the tool already included on Microsoft OS for, in fact, disk and partition management, and third-party software EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition e MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Disk management

First let's try to understand how to merge two partitions on Windows using Disk management, the tool that, as anticipated, is already included in the Redmond home operating system (starting from Windows Vista) and allows you to fully manage your computer's disks and partitions.

To use it for your purpose, start it by clicking on the Start button (I cheer with the pennant Windows) located at the bottom left of the taskbar, by typing partitions in the search field and selecting the tool Create and format hard drive partitions.

Once the Disk Management window is displayed on the desktop, right-click on the partition you want to merge with the other (you can find them all below) and select, from the menu that opens, the option Delete volume. You will then see a Windows warning that you are about to delete the partition. You click on the button Si and wait a few moments for the partition to be transformed into unallocated space.

If you are unable to delete the secondary partition, please format it first by right clicking on it, selecting the option Format from the context menu and then pressing the button OK to confirm the completion of the operation.

Next, right click on the blue box of the primary partition to which you want to add the space of the other newly freed partition and, from the menu that opens, select the option Extend Volume. In the window that will be shown to you at this point, press the button NEXT, make sure in the field Select the amount of space in MB all free space available on the disk is selected (otherwise you can do it yourself), click again on NEXT and, finally, on the button end. It was easy, wasn't it?

EASEUS Partition Master

While the disk and partition management tool included with Windows is very convenient and reliable, there are circumstances in which using a third-party tool may nevertheless be the best solution. I am referring to the possibility of merging two adjacent partitions without deleting the data present in them. In this regard, I suggest you put it to the test EASEUS Partition Master.

It is a program that allows you to perform various partitioning operations and that also allows you to perform the operation described above by saving the data of the secondary partitions in a folder, copying them automatically to the primary one and then unifying the disk. It's free (but it is also available in some paid variants, with prices starting at $ 59,95, including extra features) and is compatible with all Windows OS.

To download it to your computer, connect to the program's website and click on the button Free Download that you find in correspondence of the column Free. Then type your e-mail address in the appropriate field that you see appear, presses the button Try Partition Master Free and, subsequently, on the link Download.

When the download is complete, open the .exe file obtained and, in the window that appears on the desktop, click on the buttons Yes, OKNEXT, Accept e NEXT. Remove the check mark related to the installation of any extra software, click again on NEXT twice and finally press the button end. Then start the program by double clicking on the relative icon that has been added to the desktop and press the button Si.

Now that the EASEUS Partition Master main window is displayed, close the trial screen of the paid version of the program and select the primary partition drive of the disk from the list at the top. Then click on the button Merge located on the left sidebar.

In the further window that opens, put the check mark on the box corresponding to the adjacent secondary partition you want to merge with the primary one, check that in the drop-down menu Merge Partitions a the primary partition is selected and click on the button OK located at the bottom right to save the settings.

At this point, wait for the program to check the file system of the two partitions (this could take a few minutes) and, when the process is complete, click on the buttons Apply (located at the top right) e Si to start merging the two partitions.

Note that all files present in the secondary partition will be saved in a specific folder in the root directory of the primary partition.

MiniTool Partition Wizard

Another alternative tool to the one already included in Windows that you can use to merge two partitions is MiniTool Partition Wizard: it is undoubtedly one of the best free software for what concerns the partitioning of the disks. It is free (but eventually it is also available in some paid versions, with prices starting from 39 $, with additional features), it works on all Windows operating systems and also allows you to avoid the loss of data on the partitions to be merged .

To use it on your computer, connect to the program's website and click on the button Download placed in the top center, in such a way as to start the download procedure.

When the download is complete, open the .exe file just got it and click on the buttons Si e OK in the windows that open on the desktop. Then select the item I accept the agreement and click on the buttons Next (four times in a row), install e Finsh.

Now that you see the main program window on your desktop, click on the button MiniTool Partition Wizard Free and, in the further window that opens, select, from the list in the center, the disk in relation to which you are interested in intervening and the primary partition of the same that you want to join the secondary, then right-click on it and choose the option Go from the displayed context menu.

In the further window that appears, make sure that the primary partition is selected at the top of it, press the button Next placed at the bottom, select the secondary partition (it must be an adjacent partition) always through the upper part of the window and press the button Finish placed at the bottom. Et voila!

At the end of the process, the files that were present on the secondary partition will be saved in a dedicated folder in the root directory of the primary partition.

If you are unable to merge partitions because they use a different file system, format them first. To do this, just right-click on the secondary partition you want to merge with the first one and select, from the menu that opens, the option Size. In the window that appears, make sure that it corresponds to the menu File System is set NTFS (otherwise you can do it yourself), then click on the button OK.

Merge two partitions with macOS

And up MacOS? How to join two partitions together? Simple: just use Disk Utility, the tool already included in all Macs that, similar to Disk Management on Windows, allows you to manage Mac disks and partitions.

To use it, first start the tool by clicking on its icon (the one with the hard disk and the stethoscope) found in the folder Other of Launchpad. Alternatively, you can also launch Disk Utility via Spotlight, Crab or from the folder Applications> Utilities from the Mac.

Once the Disk Utility window appears on your desktop, select thedisk icon in relation to which you are interested go to act from the left sidebar and press the button Partition placed at the top.

In the window that opens, use the pie chart to select the secondary partitions to delete and click on the button [-] which is at the bottom to get rid of it. Next, make sure that the primary partition takes up the entire space of the chart (if not, resize it yourself) and then click the buttons Apply e Partition.

Once this is done, all previously selected partitions will be deleted and the newly freed space will be automatically added to the primary partition. Done!

Note that if you are using a version of macOS prior to the 10.11 (El Capitan), the procedure to be put into practice is slightly different from that described above. In fact, after starting Disk Utility, what you need to do is select theyour hard drive icon from the left sidebar, select the tab Partition and click on the box for the secondary partition you want to merge with the primary one.

Then click the button [-] located at the bottom left and on the button Remove, to confirm deletion of the partition. Next, click on the three lines located at the bottom right to expand the primary partition and drag the partition pane all the way to the bottom. Finally, press the buttons Apply e Partition.

The procedure for merging disk partitions can take several minutes. Its actual duration depends on the amount of data to be processed and the performance of the disk.

Merge two partitions with Ubuntu

Also on Ubuntu it is possible to merge two partitions and even then, it is an extremely simple operation to perform. To do this, just use the utility Discs included “standard”, which, in fact, allows you to manage disks and partitions, such as Disk Management on Windows and Disk Utility on macOS.

You ask me how to make use of it for your purpose? I'll tell you right away! First, click the button Show applicazioni (I cheer with i shot) placed on the Dock, look for the utility Discs using the search field at the top and start it by clicking on the relative icon (the one with thehard drive).

In the window that at this point you will see open on the desktop, select the disk you are interested in going to act from the list on the left, select the secondary partition you want to join the primary of the graph below and press the button [-] located even lower.

Then click on the button Delete in the window that opens on the screen, type the password of your user account on Ubuntu and press the button Authentic to confirm the completion of the operation.

Once the secondary partition is removed, all data on it will be automatically deleted and the free space available will be added directly to the primary partition. Easier than that?
