If you want to merge spreadsheet cells and use Excel for Windows or macOS, proceed as follows: open the document on which you want to act and identify the cells to merge.

At this point, click on the first cell to merge, hold down the left mouse button and select the other cells to merge, which must be to the right of the first selected cell, if you want to merge cells horizontally, or below it, if you want to merge cells vertically.

Alternatively, you can select cells that are both below and to the right of the first selected cell to merge a group of adjacent cells.

If you prefer to navigate the workbook using only the keyboard, use the directional arrows to reach the first cell to be joined, then hold down the key Shift / Shift and use the right arrow e / o la down arrow to select the other cells to merge.

Now, all you have to do is select the tab Home from the Excel toolbar (top left), expand the menu Merge and center located in the center of the latter and select one of the available options.

Once you have made all the desired changes to your spreadsheet, you can save the file by simply clicking on the icon floppy disk located at the top left or, if you want to save a new copy of the document, by going to the menu Fillet of Excel, located at the top left, and selecting the option Save with name give the menu check if you press.

Are you currently working on a PC that does not allow you to run Excel or install it? Don't panic: if you have the urge to edit a spreadsheet on the latter, you can easily succeed in your intent using Excel Online, the Web version of the famous Microsoft program that works from all major browsers to surf the Internet.

Excel Online is completely free: you only need a Microsoft account to use it. As easily understood, it does not include all the functions of the desktop version of the program available for Windows or macOS, but to merge the cells of a workbook is just fine.

To proceed, then connected to the Excel Online home page, log in to your Microsoft account (if necessary) and choose whether to create one blank workbook or whether to work on an existing document. In the latter case you will have to upload the file to OneDrive, the Microsoft cloud storage service I told you about in my dedicated tutorial.


To proceed with uploading the documents, connected to your OneDrive, drag the document to be edited in the browser window, wait for the upload to finish and double-click the icon of the workbook you want to work on (always within OneDrive ) to import it into Excel Online.

Perfect: now all you have to do is follow the same procedure that I showed you in the previous chapter of the tutorial, dedicated to the desktop version of Excel. Select, then the cells to merge, go to the tab Home Excel Online (top left), expand the menu Merge and center (the table icon with the two blue arrows in the center, located in the section Align toolbar) and select one of the available options.

  • Merge and center - to merge cells horizontally and center the text. Only the text of the cell that is at the top left will be kept.
  • Merge - to merge cells horizontally, leaving the text justified on the left. Only the text of the cell that is at the top left will be kept.

Any changes made to the file will be automatically saved to OneDrive. To save the document locally and download it to your computer, click on the button Fillet located at the top left, select the item Save with name from the menu that appears sideways and presses the button Save with name.

If you often find yourself working on the go, you'll be pleased to know that Excel is also available as an app for Android, iPhone / iPad and Windows 10 Mobile. It allows you to create new spreadsheets and modify existing ones. It should also be emphasized that it is free for all devices that have dimensions equal to or less than 10.1 inches (otherwise you need to subscribe to the service Office 365, with prices starting from 7 euros / month).

Play Store if you use an Android or App Store if you use one equipped with iOS). Once the download is complete, start the application, log in with your Microsoft account and choose whether to create one new workbook or whether to open an existing file. In the latter case, select the tab apri of the app and choose whether to import a file from the device memory or from one of the supported cloud storage services, such as OneDrive, dropbox e Google Drive.

Once you open the document to edit, if you are acting from smartphone, select the first cell to merge (by tapping on it); then use the indicators that appear on the screen to select the other cells to merge, press the button ... or arrow located in the lower right corner of the screen, in order to call up the Excel toolbar, and select the item Merge and center from the card Home.

If you use a tabletInstead, you can count on a tabbed interface very similar to that of Excel for a computer and, consequently, you can act in a simpler way. All you have to do is select the cells to merge (by tapping on the first and then moving the indicators that appear on the screen towards the others), go to the tab Home of the app (top left) and press the icon Merge and center (the table icon with the two blue arrows in the center).

Once you have applied the changes to your document, press on back arrow located at the top left and the file will be saved directly on the cloud storage service from which it comes or on the device memory. If it's a new workbook you just created, you'll need to type in the name you want to give it.
